Grocery shopping can be an overwhelming experience, especially when you have multiple food allergies. With so many options and foods that have countless ingredients, it’s hard to know what to look for, or even where to start!
As a dietitian, I understand how crucial it is to find safe allergy-friendly foods when shopping for you and your family. So, I went to one of my favorite stores—ALDI—and did some of the sleuthing for you! I wanted to find foods that could fit for anyone with a wheat, dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut, fish, shellfish, and/or soy allergy. Check out my top picks below.
Best Pre-Made Meal – Southwestern Style Chicken Quinoa Bowl
This quick meal is filling and delicious! Made with red and white quinoa plus sweet potatoes and black beans, this dish provides plenty of fiber and protein, perfect for days you’re busy and on the go.
Best Cracker – Roasted Red Pepper Brown Rice Crackers
It can be quite a challenge to find tasty wheat-free and nut-free crackers with a satisfying crunch. These brown rice crackers are tasty and work great for dips like hummus!
Best Quick Breakfast – Organic Instant Oatmeal Oats and Flax
Throw in some extra fiber and protein (like chia seeds) and you have an easy morning meal to keep you feeling energized until lunch. With just oats, flax, sugar, and salt–an ingredients list doesn’t get much simpler than that!
Best Bread – Store Brand Whole Grain Gluten-Free Wide Pan Bread
So many gluten-free breads leave something to be desired, but this one’s different.
Found on the shelf (that’s right—not frozen) it is soft and free of other common allergen ingredients like egg and soy. Everyone’s preference on bread is different, but I would highly recommend trying it!
Best Pre-Cooked Protein – Appleton Farms Grilled Chicken Strips
When you’re tight on time and need a protein to throw on a salad or in a wrap, this chicken is a great go-to! Seasoned with vinegar, salt, garlic, onion, and citrus extract it is flavorful and moist after heating.
In addition to a variety of foods in their fresh meat and produce sections, other great allergy-friendly products to look for at Aldi include:
